The late Chairman Mao proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China at a historical moment on October 1, 1949. He stood in Tiananmen Square on that day. Thus the Tiananmen Square has always been identified with the People's Republic. After suffering many years at the hands of foes both within and without, the people in China stood up once again as equals with other nations in the world. Today the Tiananmen Square is the focal point of most public events and celebrations. A huge portrait of the Chairman is placed at the center of Tiananmen Tower, which is usually used as a review stand. The Great Hall of the People, the Monument to the People's Heroes, and the Chairman's Memorial Hall are other landmarks at Tienanmun Square.
